Join Rooted Rhythms - A Fungi-Inspired Fiddle Workshop with Hannah Read
Wednesday 18 October, 10 - 2.30pm
St Cecilia’s Hall, 50 Niddry Street, Edinburgh (Full address here)
This October break, we are hosting a free day workshop for young musicians aged 13-18 interested in exploring the musicality in their playing along with improvisation and composition taking inspiration from the fascinating world of fungi crossing the arts-science divide.
This is part of a collaboration between Edinburgh-born transatlantic fiddle player Hannah Read and mycologist (someone who researches fungi) and fiddle player Dr Edward Wallace at the University of Edinburgh. Sparked by a connection through a track Hannah wrote in honour of her father who was a prominent mycologist himself, this led to a commissioning of a new album all inspired by the science of fungi which will be launched the day after this workshop.
The workshop will be held on the Wednesday 18 October from 10 - 2.30pm and includes:
An opportunity to preview and learn one of the tunes from Hannah and learn about her composition process and musical expression
A chance to understand more about the science behind fungi and use this to improvise and then put together a soundtrack in small groups
An open discussion about careers both involving professional music and research (and the links between them!)
Those who are joining will be also invited to join the album launch the following day (Thursday 19th October, from 7pm, at Summerhall) to perform their group devised soundtrack.
The workshop is free, with a pizza lunch provided and travel expenses can be claimed back for both the workshop and the concert the next day.
Places are limited. If you are interested and have a group of young people or individuals in mind, please get in touch with Katie@scienceceilidh.com
